My Shrinking Capsule Wardrobe

A Capsule Wardrobe

A Capsule WardrobeThis month marks a year since I started using a capsule wardrobe. It is more or less winter here in Oklahoma, so I decided to take a look at my cold weather wardrobe. When I first tried this, I went with 40 hangers and a reasonable number of shoes.  I  chose not to look at outerwear or jewelry. After a month, I realized I could easily cut back further. I adopted the 333 method: 33 items for 3 months- including shoes, outerwear and jewelry.  Lately, I’ve been thinking that since I wear scrubs 3 days a week at work, I probably don’t need 33 items. Certainly, there are items in my closet that have not been worn often.

What’s in My Capsule Wardrobe

This season, my not-at-work wardrobe is 25 items. For the record, I have 3 sets of scrubs, one for each day I work.   I have a heavy coat and a scarf for outer wear. Four pairs of shoes and a belt.  The only jewelry I kept out is a pair of stud earrings. My wedding band and my bracelet are exempt from counting because they have sentimental value.

I have four pairs of pants: boot cut jeans, a pair of black jean-cut slacks, and two pairs of leggings; one black, one grey.  For tops, I chose two t-shirts and three shells. Also a flannel shirt, a dressier burgundy shirt, five cardigan sweaters in different styles, and one pull over sweater.  The last item in my wardrobe is a plain black shell dress.  Honestly, I don’t know if I will need to wear it, but you never know. A black dress is always a good thing to have.

I tried to choose clothes that all work together, so I get lots of different outfits with just a few items.  I also wanted a little bit of color. My burgundy shirt, and my plaid flannel are perfect for this.

I’m fairly content with my capsule wardrobe choices.  The pieces are all very comfortable, and I can go casual or dress up a little for a night out. I would like a capsule wardrobe ~ theflyingc.netto replace the black leggings with some taupe slacks so I have another color option. I just need to convince myself to go shopping. It’s worth mentioning that the t-shirts and shells, along with my burgundy shirt and jeans are  part of my warm weather wardrobe, too.  My entire year-around wardrobe is about 60 items, including all my jewelry.

After a year of using a capsule wardrobe, I haven’t missed a larger one. My clothing is easy to care for, doesn’t take up a lot of space, and saves me time and money. I could get dressed in the dark, and still looked pulled together when I walked out the door. It’s actually pretty awesome.
